Rifle Review: The CZ 527 Varmint MTR
The smallest of CZ's center-fire platforms, the 527 has proven itself among firearm enthusiasts around the world. So much so, that in Europe it has won more awards in the "light rifle" category than any other rifle ever.
Early last year, CZ introduced the 527 Varmint MTR (Match Target Rifle) as the ideal rifle for both varminters and precision shooters. This MTR model is comprised of everything a user would require from a modern, highly accurate and powerful rifle.
APPLICATIONS
Thanks to the tried and tested CZ 527 system, the rifle is comfortable, reliable and fast to control.
For those looking to utilize the Varmint MTR for target shooting, you're in luck. CZ has designed the MTR model to provide enhanced accuracy with a heavy-profile barrel and a vertical pistol grip with a wide forend that’s perfect for riding a sandbag.
These features also appeal heavily to varminters and along with an adjustable trigger, the 527 Varmint MTR is optimal for both varmint hunting and precision shooting.
THE DESIGN
Tuned to perform, the MTR differentiates from the other 527 models. It sports a heavy-profile hammer-forged barrel with a larger barrel diameter, measuring at .866” at the muzzle. This thick walled, 25.6" (650 mm) long barrel, also incorporates a target pattern muzzle. All these essential features aid in producing a one-hole result at the range.
The Varmint MTR also features a fully-adjustable trigger very similar to the one found on the 557 models. This trigger can be finely adjusted from 2.25 to 4.95 lbs (10 to 22 N) which is a superb feature for target shooting where precision is required.
The action of the Varmint MTR is based on the iconic Mauser action, but scaled down to accommodate the smaller calibers. The action is fed from a 5-round detachable single stack magazine.
Meant to be used in conjunction with a riflescope, the Varmint MTR does not incorporate iron sights and it has an 16mm dovetail milled into the top of its receiver for attaching scope ring mounts.
Further distinguishing it, the Varmint MTR features an oiled stock rather than the standard lacquered stocks. CZ also designed the Turkish walnut stock to be highly ergonomic. Its vertical grip and forearm sports a stippled pattern in all the right places leading to a secure grip while shooting.
The MTR is threaded for use with a suppressor (1/2×28 in .223 & 5/8×24 in 6.5 Grendel).
