Some rifles are named conservatively, but this is not one of those rifles. The Gunwerks Skunkwerks Tiny A.F. is an 11.25-inch barreled, integrally suppressed, folding precision rifle chambered in 6mm ARC that collapses to 19.5 inches, rings steel past 1,000 yards, and ships in a Pelican Air case alongside a Yeti flask and a humidor full of cigars. It is absurd. It is wonderful. And it is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you turn a team of precision rifle engineers loose and tell them the only rule is that there are no rules.

The Skunkwerks Program

Gunwerks, based in Cody, Wyoming, has built its reputation on complete long-range rifle systems. Their ClymR and Magnus platforms are serious tools for serious hunters and precision shooters, engineered as integrated packages where every component, from action to ammunition, is designed to work together. The company does not assemble rifles from catalogs. They manufacture their own actions, stocks, barrels, and ammunition, and they test and zero every system before it ships.

Skunkwerks is the other side of that coin. It is Gunwerks' public R&D program, focused on limited-run projects where the engineering team gets to chase ideas that would never survive a traditional product planning meeting. These are not prototypes or proof-of-concept experiments. They are finished, shippable rifle systems built around concepts that push the fun factor to its limits while maintaining the mechanical integrity that the Gunwerks name demands. The Tiny A.F. is arguably the most audacious Skunkwerks project to date, and it exists in large part to celebrate a specific legislative moment: the elimination of the $200 NFA tax stamp with the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, effective January 1, 2026.

This is a "2-Stamper," requiring Form 4 submissions for both the short-barreled rifle and the suppressor. With the tax burden removed, Gunwerks built a rifle that leans into NFA territory with both hands and dares you not to grin.

The Rifle

At the center of the package is an 11.25-inch heavy-carbon barrel in Gunwerks' C60 contour, chambered in 6mm ARC. The cartridge choice is deliberate and smart. The 6 ARC is the smallest case capacity of any Gunwerks chambering, but its efficient design benefits enormously from fast-burning powders in a short barrel. Gunwerks loads the 105-grain Berger Hunting VLD to approximately 2,300 feet per second out of this barrel, which is a legitimate ballistic package. The company claims reliable performance on small to medium-sized game inside 500 yards and the ability to connect on steel well past 1,000. For a rifle shorter than most lever-action carbines, that is a remarkable statement.

The stock is a modified version of Gunwerks' proprietary ClymR, a carbon fiber design that is already one of the lightest and most ergonomic stocks in their lineup. For the Tiny A.F., the Skunkwerks team engineered a folding hinge directly into the carbon fiber layup. The requirements were nonnegotiable: the hinge had to fold tight to the action for minimum overall length, lock up with zero play, withstand serious recoil forces, and not interfere with shooter ergonomics. The final design uses just nine parts and operates with a single button press. Folded, the rifle collapses to 19.5 inches. Extended with the Gunwerks 6IX+ steel suppressor mounted, the total length is 37 inches. Weight with the suppressor attached comes in at 9 pounds 2 ounces.

The ClymR stock features Gunwerks' signature negative comb, which positions the recoil pad higher and more in line with the bore axis, reducing muzzle rise and felt recoil. The stock also carries a flush-mount bipod rail, integrated QD sling mounts, and an aluminum bedding block.

The Package

Gunwerks does not sell the Tiny A.F. as a bare rifle. It ships as a complete system, and the package reflects both the company's systems-engineering philosophy and the Skunkwerks program's irreverent personality.

The optic is a Leupold Mark 5HD 2-10x30 FFP, a first focal plane scope that provides a wide magnification range suited to the rifle's versatile engagement envelope. The suppressor is the Gunwerks 6IX+ steel unit, which mates to the threaded barrel and brings the sound signature down to a level that makes the shooting experience genuinely pleasant rather than merely tolerable.

The rifle feeds from detachable magazines. A 4-round flush-fit magazine ships with the rifle for a clean, snag-free profile, and a 10-round AICS-pattern magazine is included for range sessions where capacity matters more than compactness. One hundred rounds of Gunwerks Long Range Hunting ammunition, loaded with 105-grain Berger VLDs, come in the box. The entire system ships in a custom Pelican Air case.

And then there are the extras. A Yeti flask engraved with the Skunkwerks logo. A TubR humidor. Two Knuckle Sandwich cigars. Because if you are going to build a rifle that celebrates the removal of a federal tax on firearms, you might as well celebrate properly.

Why It Works

The Tiny A.F. could easily be dismissed as a novelty. A short-barreled precision rifle with a funny name and a cigar in the box. But the engineering underneath the humor is dead serious. The 6mm ARC in an 11.25-inch barrel is not a gimmick. The cartridge was designed from the start for efficient powder burn in shorter barrels, and the 105-grain VLD retains enough velocity and BC to deliver meaningful terminal performance at distances that would embarrass most 16-inch .308 builds. The folding ClymR stock is not a bolt-on afterthought. It is an integrated carbon fiber component engineered specifically for this rifle. The Leupold MK5HD is not a throw-in optic. It is a genuinely capable piece of glass that belongs on a precision rifle.

The result is a system that packs into spaces where rifles have no business fitting and shoots like something twice its size. For the backcountry hunter who wants a suppressed precision rifle in a go-bag. For the ranch owner who wants something compact, quiet, and capable of handling predators and varmints at distance.
